Applications/Uses And Examples

We use it to make certian animals that we like. For example, we take the two largest pigs and breed them together to make a very large pig with lots of meat, then they do that again and they then have two very big pigs. They take those two large pigs and breed them together to make an even bigger pig, with more meat.

Ethical Issues

History

Darwin used the term twice in the 1859.Charles Darwin coined the term as an illustration of his proposed wider process of natural selection. Darwin noted that many domesticated animals and plants had special properties that were developed by intentional animal and plant breeding from individuals that showed desirable characteristics, and discouraging the breeding of individuals with less desirable characteristics.

Advantages And Disadvantages

It may cause mutations, Artificial selection is the process of unintentional modification of a species through human actions which encourage the breeding of certain traits over others. Some disadvantages of artificial selection is that it is inhumane, can cause mutations or produce new problems. An example of the inhumane process is the new way of breeding chickens. These chickens are produced without feathers. Critics say the feather-free chickens will suffer more than normal birds. Males might be unable to mate, because they cannot flap their wings, and naked chickens of both sexes are more susceptible to parasites, mosquito attacks and sunburn.

Description

Artificial selection/selective breeding describes intentional breeding for certain traits, or combination of traits. Artificial Selection can also be unintentional. Pigs are artificially selected by man to produce the largest amount of meat. Artificial Selection is where we choose two different animals with different traits that are both good, and we find useful and we breed them. Artificial selection is the process of changing the characteristics of animals by artificial means.
